If you like elements of traditional design and\u00a0appreciate more contemporary style, you\u2019re actually right where you need to be. Transitional design is a seamless blending of\u00a0modern and\u00a0traditional, usually in a soothing neutral color palette<\/a>. \u201cBecause transitional\u00a0design\u00a0includes elements from both sides of the spectrum you can use it in any\u00a0style of home. It\u2019s never out of place,\u201d\u00a0says\u00a0Normandy Designer\u00a0Jackie Jensen<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cTransitional design makes it a joy to live in your charming 1920s home without feeling\u00a0like you are stuck in the past,\u201d says Jackie, adding, \u201cExisting elements\u00a0of the home can balance out choices that are a little more current and the results are an inviting space that\u2019s in line with\u00a0today\u2019s lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n

Transitional design is intended to feel timeless<\/a>. Choose, muted, neutral colors and aim for simplicity<\/a> whenever possible.\u00a0\u201cCrown molding is an easy place to simplify. You can choose really nice molding that\u2019s not too plain or too ornate,\u201d says Jackie. Painted cabinetry and trim are another hallmark of transitional design.<\/p>\n

For the kitchen, Jackie recommends\u00a0shaker cabinets, which are truly timeless.\u00a0\u201cExplore the different profiles that are available to dress up shaker cabinets. You can play around with them to tilt your design either way, a little more traditional or a little more\u00a0contemporary,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\"WinterFollow the same philosophy as you make the rest of your design choices. If you like something that feels a little more forward, temper that with the material. For instance, if you like a waterfall edge island, consider an engineered stone<\/a> with pretty veining that has a more vintage feeling to it. \u201cA solid color might feel\u00a0too\u00a0harsh, but\u00a0if you soften it up, it will be beautiful and not out of place,\u201d says Jackie.<\/p>\n

Lighting fixtures<\/a>, always the jewelry of your rooms, can be showstoppers, just keep the overall balance of the space in mind. \u201cIf you like a crystal chandelier, that can work. If you\u2019re drawn to warm brass or gold tones in a simple style, great. Transitional style lighting is decorative but not overwhelming,\u201d Jackie tells us.<\/p>\n

\u201cTransitional design doesn\u2019t really date as quickly as if you go all in on one style or the other. It does what the name implies, it transitions through trends,\u201d emphasizes Jackie.<\/p>\n
