A ledge or shelf for your slab backsplash<\/a> is not only stylish but convenient \u2013 you can have your spices within reach, or even a framed photo of your \u201cbest cook ever\u201d grandmother \u2013 but picking the right material is key in this design process.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re opting for a more open, minimalist look to your range area, a slab backsplash with a ledge offers some added functionality,\u201d Normandy Designer Kathryn O\u2019Donovan<\/a> says. \u201cBut when choosing your material, keep in mind that while natural stone<\/a> will hold up to the heat generated behind a gas range, some engineered materials may not.\u201d<\/p>\n

The heat produced from an open-flame range can change the chemical composition and impact the color of some engineered stone<\/a>, which contains resin that\u2019s used to bind crushed natural material.<\/p>\n

\u201cA slab backsplash, shelf or no shelf, made from engineered materials can\u2019t always co-exist with an open-burner range,\u201d she says. \u201cSome manufacturers won\u2019t warranty their products in this scenario.\u201d<\/p>\n

But if you don\u2019t choose natural stone, you still have options.<\/p>\n

\"Marble\u201cIf you have your heart set on a certain type of engineered material<\/a>, there is always the option to go with an induction range, which produces minimal heat,\u201d Kathryn says. \u201cAn induction<\/a> range also adds to the minimalist aesthetic that often inspires a backsplash ledge design.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oftentimes, people opt for the same material as the range backsplash<\/a> for their backsplash shelf. But you can opt for a different shelf material, depending on the look you\u2019re trying to achieve \u2013 just avoid flammable materials like wood, and seek out non-combustible options. While you can discuss the ideal depth of the ledge with your designer, backsplash ledges or backsplash shelves are generally about four inches deep.<\/p>\n

Another thing to keep in mind, especially if you have a natural stone ledge, is that you can request to have the underside of the ledge to be polished or honed to match the finish on the top.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome natural stones might have mesh on the underside for stability, which can detract from a streamlined look,\u201d Kathryn says. \u201cAnd keep in mind that not all materials can be polished on both sides, like porcelain. It\u2019s important to ask these questions before you make your final decision on the material.\u201d<\/p>\n
